JRE Tech Policy

Purpose:

Technology is used at our school to enhance learning, not replace high-quality instruction, hands-on experiences, or social interaction. All technology use should be:

  • Curriculum-based and district-approved
  • Purposeful and relevant to learning goals
  • Developmentally appropriate for elementary students
  • Balanced with movement, collaboration, and offline learning

Approved Instructional ToolsTeachers may use district-approved digital tools that directly support instruction and curriculum goals. Commonly used platforms include:

  • Savvas
  • Epic
  • PebbleGo
  • Lexia
  • Math for Love
  • Math Fact Lab
  • Britannica
  • Amplify
  • TypingClub (Grades 3–5)
  • Sora (digital library)
  • Scholastic News
  • Success Maker

Additional tools may be used if they are district approved and clearly aligned to instructional goals.

Purposeful Use of Technology

Technology use in classrooms should:

  • Be clearly linked to curriculum, units, or projects (e.g., research, reading practice, skill building, or content exploration such as BrainPOP Jr.)
  • Support specific learning outcomes rather than serve as filler or entertainment
  • Support SEL growth and lessons
  • Be teacher-guided and monitored

Individual Daily Screen Time Guidelines

To support healthy habits and development, individual student technology use is limited as follows:

  • Grades K–2: Up to 30 minutes or less per day of individual technology use
  • Grades 3–5: Up to 1 hour or less per day of individual technology use

Exceptions may be made for teacher-approved, in-depth projects that require extended technology use.

Students receiving special education or 504 accommodations my use tech in accordance with their individual plans as a mean to access instruction.

Movement and Wellness

  • Technology use should be balanced with regular movement and brain breaks.
  • Movement breaks should last no more than 3–5 minutes and be intentionally planned.

Choice Time and Centers

  • Individual technology is to be used sparingly during centers as an extension of learning and intervention work.
  • Choice time prioritizes creativity, collaboration, hands-on exploration, and social development.

Rewards and Entertainment-Based Use

  • On occasion, technology may be used as a whole-class reward.
  • Rewards must:
    • Use school-approved content
    • Be under 30 minutes
    • Be used sparingly, not routinely

Family Partnership

We value strong partnerships with families. This policy is designed to promote transparency, consistency, and healthy technology habits. Families are encouraged to:

  • Discuss technology use with their children
  • Support balanced screen use at home
  • Reach out to teachers or administrators with questions or concerns

Review and Oversight

This policy is reviewed regularly to ensure alignment with district guidelines, best practices, and the evolving needs of students.

Our shared goal is to use technology thoughtfully to support learning while protecting students’ time, attention, and well-being.
